米国在住のまま日本語ペラペラになったアメリカ人の学習法(CEFR B2, TOEIC 785 - 940 レベル)

今回はアメリカ在住のまま日本語ペラペラになった Matt さんが運営する外国語学習者向けのサイト Matt vs Japan から単語の覚え方の動画を紹介します。

YouTube動画で使われている英単語を、オックスフォード大学出版局によるワードリスト、オックスフォード3000と5000を使ってどのレベルの単語がどれくらい使われているのか調べた結果の紹介です。

1日1動画で、未知の単語数20個前後、センテンス数も20個前後が僕としては理想ですが、何よりも興味をもてる動画かどうかを重視しています。

簡単にオックスフォード3000と5000 についてですが、CEFRに従ってコーパスを元に研究・開発された英単語リストで、オックスフォード3000の3,000単語はCEFR A1からB2レベル、これにさらに2,000語追加したオックスフォード5000はCEFR B2-C1レベルとされています。

結果は、この動画の中で使われている単語はオックスフォード5000の5,000語の内、CEFR B2レベルで97%網羅されていることが分かりました。

オックスフォード5000よりも2,000語少ないオックスフォード3000でも95%が網羅されていましたので、改めてオックスフォード 大学出版局の厳選した単語のスゴサに驚かされます。

研究によると文書の98%の単語が分かれば理解に支障が無いとも言われています。

過去に紹介した日本を紹介する動画などは、僕たち日本人に背景知識のある内容に動画という補足情報が追加されているという理由から、 文字情報のみを前提に研究結果が提唱する98%よりも少しハードルを下げて95%の単語の網羅率をレベル判定の基準にしていました。

今回はかなり複雑な内容であることと、WPMが222とネイティブのナチュラル・スピードに近いことから、研究結果が提唱する98%に近い CEFR B2レベルと判断しました。
